"Measuring & Collecting" A Contemporary Art Exhibition
Featuring Jesse Reno, Andrew Sloan, Mikey Welsh, Randy Noborikawa, Andrew Jacob, Justin 'Skr!bner' Pilotte, Clark Derbes With Dave Kinsey, Doze Green, Shepard Fairey, Phil Frost and John 'Crash' Matos
Organized and Curated by Michael Montanaro
Opening Reception Friday, February 12, 2010 530pm-10pm
Select Design 208 Flynn Avenue Burlington, Vermont
Press Release BURLINGTON, VT-Select Design is proud to present a special exhibition, "Measuring & Collecting," a major contemporary art group show, organized and curated by Michael Montanaro, of Newport, Rhode Island-based Montanaro Gallery. The show features original paintings and limited edition prints by some of today's most progressive artistic talents in the United States.
"Measuring & Collecting" pushes the boundaries of mixed aesthetics, juxtaposing fine art, urban art, and low brow, and comparing the artworks of Jesse Reno, Randy Noborikawa, Andrew Sloan, Mikey Welsh, Andrew Jacob, Justin 'Skr!bner' Pilotte, and Clark Derbes with works by pop-surrealist and graffiti legend predecessors, Dave Kinsey, Doze Green, John 'Crash' Matos, Shepard Fairey, and Phil Frost, amongst others
Subjectively and stylistically diverse, these works are a measure of each artist's evolution, demonstrating how common inspiration can produce remarkably distinct results. The show draws connections and parallels from ancient hieroglyphics discovered on cave walls to the graffiti found on the streets of New York. As in the works of featured artist Jesse Reno, these two art forms merge, resulting in something that is at once modern and primitive.
While some works included are on loan from private collections, the majority of the artwork included in the exhibit will be available for purchase. For new collectors, Select Design has produced affordable limited edition silkscreen prints and variations with Portland, Oregon-based Jesse Reno, as well as local Burlington artist and former Weezer bassist, Mikey Welsh.
The exhibition opens on Friday, February 12th with an Artist Reception from 5:30 to 10:00pm at Select Design located at 208 Flynn Avenue in Burlington, Vermont. The opening is free to the public, and the exhibition will be on display through March 12th, 2010! PacSun USA Surf Team Claims Bronze Medal in New Zealand
Jake Halstead wins Individual Silver and Lakey Peterson wins Individual Copper in 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships
Piha, New Zealand - Sunday, January 28 - The PacSun USA Surf Team battled hard all week in a wide variety of conditions. In the end, the prize was Bronze. The Australians claimed the Gold Medal and the Hawaiians, Silver, in the Team Division at the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Piha, New Zealand.
With no USA Team finalists in the Boys Under 18 Division, it was up to Jake Halstead in the Under 16's and Santa Barbara's Lakey Peterson in the Girls Division. "With 12 of the best under 18 US surfers on the plane to Piha, NZ, I was confident that we had a USA Team with the skills to win a Gold," said PacSun USA Surf Team Head Coach, Ian Cairns. "Our main rivals have traditionally been Australia, Hawaii, South Africa and France and I was keen to improve on the 2009 4th place finish."
"Piha is a short beach between two headlands and has vicious rips and currents during the 10' tide change with the surfing location switching from the left on the south end of the beach at low tide and a right at the north end at high tide," Cairns furthered. "The second area was at North Piha that hosted mostly repercharge heats."
There were some ups and downs through six of the eight days of competition but with just two days left, Team USA had 10 of our original 12 live and looking strong.
"For me this event was a great learning experience and we will be back in 2011 with a great young US team, new strategies and a revitalized effort," said Cairns.

Piha, New Zealand - Sunday, January 25 - The sun came out today in Piha and all remaining PacSun USA Surf Team athletes competed. The swell dropped over night, but progressively picked up again throughout the day.
In the Under 18 Boys, Evan Geiselman opened up for the USA Team and had a great heat - which he won handily. Evan Thompson struggled and was sent to the Repercharge Round. Andrew Doheny, already in the Repercharge Round, continued his long march forward and advanced through his heat.
The Under 16 Boys continued their dominance with all four advancing in the Qualifying Round.
In the Girls Division, Kaleigh Gilchrist was sent into the Repercharge in her early heat, Lakey Peterson advanced in the Qualifying Round. In the afternoon, Taylor Pitz and Courtney Conlogue were in the same heat against Hawaiians Malia Manuel and Nage Melamed. Rough Piha Seas Continue as Youngest Americans Rule the Day PacSun USA Surf Team's Under 16 Boys Surfed like Men--Sweeping their Qualifying Round with Wins in Powerful and Unsettled Piha Waters
Piha, New Zealand - Friday, January 23 - The youngest boys on the PacSun USA Surf Team put on a quite a show during Day Three at the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships at Piha, New Zealand. Rain, wind, and churning seas were thematic again, but the USA Team was ready. No second podium today and, for the PacSun USA Surf Team, the event was limited to the second Qualifying Round for the Boys Under 16 Division.
The PacSun USA Surf Team, fired up over yesterdays misfortunes in the Under 18's, came to the beach with their game face on. Trevor Thornton started it off in the second heat of the day--winning with a commanding lead over 2nd place finisher Hawaiian Kain Daily.
Next was Jake Halstead, who battled hard to win his heat in the challenging conditions. He was followed by Parker Coffin who opened it up in the surging sea and threw down a 8.5 to defeat Hawaiian Koa Smith.
Kolohe Andino batted clean up for the USA Under 16's and dominated his heat; he captured the day's high score of 9 and defeating Australian Creed Taggart.
"Today was a day we've been training for," said Ian Cairns, Head Coach of the PacSun USA Surf Team. "The big messy surf demanded punchy and deliberate movements. The Under 16 Boys all stepped up and surfed with authority and poise - like men. They demonstrated the composure and power of surfers well beyond their years. I'm proud of their performance today."

CHRIS WARING LEADS TEAM REEF TO VICTORY AT KATIN PRO/AM TEAM CHALLENGE PRESENTED BY PRIMO |
CHRIS WARING LEADS TEAM REEF TO VICTORY AT KATIN PRO/AM TEAM CHALLENGE PRESENTED BY PRIMO HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Jan. 15, 2010 – Local surfer Chris Waring (Seal Beach, CA), 22, ousted fellow local Brad Ettinger (Huntington Beach, CA), 25, in an action packed Final to win the Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge presented by Primo for himself and Team Reef. Ettinger’s Team Hurley, last year’s reigning Team Champion, claimed the runner-up position. The historic Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Specialty Event has a unique camaraderie-driven team-based format, with 20 four-man teams competing in an open-draw format. Team results were determined by the placement of individual surfers who received points in each heat (4 points for 1st, 3 points for 2nd, 2 points for 3rd and 1 points for 4th place). More than $28,500 in cash and prizes was awarded. Waring battled back to claim his first Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge victory after Ettinger posted the event’s only perfect 10-point ride with a lengthy barrel into the pier. Waring found a barrel of his own to earn a 9.53 out of 10, and quickly followed up with a 6.50 to overtake the goofy-footer, holding on for the win despite a valiant effort by Ettinger to bounce back. “I just can’t believe it,” Waring said. “I don’t even know what to think right now. Brad (Ettinger) started off with that 10, so to come back and win is amazing. This is a special event for Huntington Beach, and it has such a great history. Now my name is going to be up there with all of the great surfers who have won this event in the past.” In addition to taking out the personal victory, Waring’s standout performance carried Team Reef to victory over last year’s winner, Team Hurley, who finished second this year. “I’m stoked that my team was able to win,” Waring said. “Getting the win on top of it for Reef, it just couldn’t have gone any better.” 2010 FINAL RESULTS Team 1st: Reef (45 points) – Two-page spread in Surfing Magazine 2nd: Hurley (39 points) – Page ad in Surfing Magazine 3rd Surfline (37 points) – Online package in surfingthemag.com 4th: Surfing America (31 points) – Online package in surfingthemag.com Pro/Am 1st: Chris Waring (Reef) -- $4,000 and Kicker Car Stereo System 2nd: Brad Ettinger (Hurley) -- $2,000 3rd: Nathaniel Curran (Surfline) -- $1,500 4th: Evan Thompson (Surfing America) -- $1,000 5th: Andrew Doheny (Surfing America) -- $500 6th: Michael Dunphy (Hurley) -- $500 Equal 7th: Adam Lambert (Rip Curl), Anthony Petruso (Rusty) -- $250 Mike Morgan “Most Futuristic Maneuver” Andrew Doheny -- $500 Kicker Stereo System for High Heat Total Day 1: Micah Byrne Day 2: Chris Waring For complete results, highlights and images log on to www.katinproam.com <http://www.katinproam.com> .
