| |  | VOLCOM STONE'S VQS SEASLUG SURF SERIES - ZUMA BEACH, CA | | | | | The time of year had come for our annual trip to Malibu, California for the first Seaslug event of the new season. A combo swell was filling in and graced the beach of Zuma the morning of the event, which made for peaky rippable conditions. With the stage set and kids frothing to get the SeaSlug event started, we kicked it off in style at 8am. Here’s how it all went down. | | | | | Like a posse of angry shoppers, the girls were full of anxiety waiting for their final to get under way. When it was time to get it on, the local females took over and dominated the heat. Frankie Harrer and Chandler Parr were taking turns locking in good scores throughout the final. Morgan Gore put up a good showing too but, had a pending Biology final on her mind. But in the end it was Chandler Parr and her impressive hacks that would earn her the victory, a Rivera complete skateboard and backpack full of other goodies. Billie Malkin, Filippa Ferrara, and Amanda LeVett rounded out the final. | | | | | Not even a freshly mixed up batch of saturated Country Time lemonade could keep the groms out of the water. Vinny Leonelli, Conner Lundy, and Ashton Malkin put up a good fight in the early rounds, but couldn’t find their rhythm in the final. Jay Christianson drove from San Diego to win, but he came up a wave short in the final. With the help of some handy coconut juice and a long last name, Thelen McKinna-Worrell turned up the heat in the final and left Logan Rauhut burnt to the crisp. Thelen grabbed the win, a Volcom beach cruiser and bag loaded with prizes. | | | | | The Juniors final was next and they didn't disappoint. It was a fierce battle to the end, but some Juniors had too many helpings of the six foot subs for lunch. Kent Nishya and Conrad Carr exchanged the lead for most of the final, but it would be swept away as Simon Murdoch found a gem of a wave and slashed it to shore to pick up the win and those valuable Crustaceous qualifier points. Bobby Okvist, Dimitri Papavassiliou, and Sam Regan rounded out the final. | | | | | As the day was coming to the end, the Pro-am finalists were hazed for that $500 first place prize. Matt King and Rodger Eales won their quarters to advance straight in the final, but I guess the long wait was too much to overcome, as they ran out of momentum. Shaun Donovan, the other quarter final winner, was poised and ready, but also would come up short in the end. Tyson Parsons and Gabe Boucher would be sucked into the void as each could only muster one good wave. Matt McCabe held off is day job to stay and compete for the money, which would definetly pay off in the end. He got fired from his job, but won the final and the Electric Volt Thrower move of the event with a huge frontside air that sealed the win.
